Seminar ‚Digital Design and Full Scale Fabrication’ (Dig Des Fab) is taught at University of Applied Arts in Vienna, Institute of Architecture, Department of Structural Design during Winter Semester 2020/2021.
During this seminar new digital design methods and conceptual framework of early-design stage rationalization were explored. Using tectonic shape of a column as a architectural archetype for a case study, students firstly developed spatial structures using the Karamba plugin. These structures were rationalized into voxel geometry using topological optimization. A software tool for XR (Extended Reality) visualization Fologram was subsequently used to adapt the geometry in a sub-area and to analyze it statically and constructively. The optimized geometry was printed and fired in a ceramic 3D printer (collaboration Keramikstudio Die Angewandte).
